Our Story
Summer is an exciting time for children — camps, leisure, and time with friends are meant to be the norm. For children with certain disabling conditions however, when school ends, much of their social world pauses with it. Families, already carrying more than most people understand, are left without viable options for the kinds of experiences that typically-developing children enjoy every summer.
The need was obvious. We simply decided it was time to do something about it.
Why “The Wave Function Project”
The wave function is a mathematical formula that explains the existence of particles on an infinite wave — waiting to be observed and collapsed into a "reality." We hold true that a full range of possibilities is simultaneously present for all our campers, and when conditions are right, these possibilities are endless.
The right environment changes everything. That is what we are here to witness — potential, made visible.
Our Board
I've spent over a decade working in special education and I feel so blessed that I have a job in which I truly get to do the thing I love most — work with kids. I love their humor and their perspective. Every single day they remind me that the world is bigger and stranger and more wonderful than I give it credit for.
In my free time I enjoy practicing yoga, reading and spending time with the people I care about most. I love being involved with all of the communities of which I count my self a part and am so excited that we’re able to work with so many great people to make this camp possible!
Alex Cohill - Executive Director
Hi! I am a special education teacher in the Outer Banks, entering my 10th year in the field. I am also a member of the Dare County Autism Team, where I work collaboratively to support students with diverse learning needs. My passion for special education extends beyond the classroom, which is why I am excited to help launch this summer program for individuals with disabilities. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience joy, connection, and fun during the summer months.
Outside of my professional life, I am happily married and the proud owner of a beloved dachshund. Family is incredibly important to me, and I am deeply committed to giving back to the community that I call home.
Lauren Bradshaw - Secretary and Program Coordinator
A 20+ year hospitality veteran, I’m so excited to be a part of an organization focused on inclusivity, connection and possibility for kids who haven’t had the opportunity to experience traditional summer camps. Camp was such an important part of my childhood and as soon as I was old enough, I worked for a non profit camp program for 8 years. Serving on leadership teams each summer, I was able to foster relationships with students and organizations focused on marginalized communities.
I believe that we are all wired for connection. Everyone should feel seen, heard and valued, regardless of their abilities. When I’m not working, you can find me birdwatching with my two cats, watching women’s basketball, or working in my garden.
